Sheffield United take on Northampton Town at Sixfields later this evening, and he’s talked about the game and also some injury hopes.
Following on from the very disappointing result for fans against Burton Albion, manager Nigel Clough again said he was too down himself because results are secondary at this stage for him – but obviously he is demanding more than that at the next time of asking.
Speaking to the Official Site he explained.
‘We will be looking for some players to do 607- minutes, then those that don’t get the game time at Northampton will feature more prominently against Dundee on Friday. The first few matches are about making sure all the players get a good amount of the action, before we start to focus on certain aspects as we progress. Getting fit and sharp remains the aim, but we want and expect to see a much improved showing from the weekend too and I am sure the travelling supporters will be thinking the same.’
Ahead of the Northampton game, the gaffer will no doubt know by now, but he’s also hoping to Ryan Flynn back in contention following his hamstring problem, and also Marc McNulty who has been struggling with a bad back.
When speaking about the duo it came closely after the Burton game, so they have had a few days to rest further now so hopefully will be alright, but their omissions were mainly precautionary in any eent, because Clough explained that especially at this stage of the season with a few weeks left, there’s no point in risking a player and running the risk of making an injury worse when a bit of rest and physio can correct it quickly.
‘There’s nothing to be gained from taking risks with people now. We’d rather them miss a game or two now than four of five when the season proper gets underway.’
One player definitely missing from this game is new signing James Wallace who is still struggling to shake off a niggly issues associated with an injury he picked up last season. It’s nothing too serious, but again it’s not something worth taking a risk on when he has time to play catch up.
