Manager Nigel Clough has said he was happy enough with a point from the game against Fleetwood Town this weekend as there were a lot of positives he could take from the game.

With Bob Harris opening the scoring for us, the manager was pleased to have finally see the two lads in action together up front, with Jamie Murphy playing in the hole, and he felt it worked really well and will only get better as a formation in the future.

Speaking to the Official Site following the full time whistle, the gaffer explained.

‘It’s a good point away from home, although it’s always disappointing not to win the game when you have taken the lead. It was an even game though, even in the last 10-15 minutes both teams were positive and tried to win, with chances coming at both ends.’

Clough went on to say that he was very pleased with our first half showing in particular, and he feels our formation may have surprised Fleetwood.

‘It’s the first chance we have had to get the two big lads together up front, with Jamie in behind and offensively it worked well. It’s just a shame we had so many midfielders unavailable on the day, and with every formation there are pros and cons and the way we setup left us exposed down the flanks as we saw for their equaliser.’

Clough added though that he wanted United to be more positive, and as the game drew out with sacrificed the width and got the ball forward quicker and he felt there were positives from that, although it’s something that will work better against some opponents than it will others, but it gives us another option and a dimension to work with which has pleased him.

Going into Tuesday game, the gaffer also said he doubted we’d go with the same formation again against Southampton and he is looking to make a few changes for Southampton, but he’s pleased to be going into the Cup clash with some momentum.
