Manager Nigel Clough has said he’s been pleased with the work the players have put into pre season training so far.

With United now a week into our pre season preparations for 2014-15 having returned last Thursday, Clough says he believes the players have already made great strides in their fitness levels again now, especially as they have tried to shake things up even as far as training in local parks as well as using local athletic facilities to help change the scenery.

Speaking to the Official Site the gaffer explained.

‘The players returned in excellent condition, but that is the norm these days. The lads are given close season programmes to complete over the summer and reminded that they are still professional footballers even when they aren’t training every day.’

With some new additions to the playing staff, the gaffer was also pleased to see them settle in quickly with the group and he credits the existing squad for helping them to feel so welcome in the group as a whole because he knows it makes a huge difference to players coming in for the first time.

As for the training shake up and the variety of venues, he adds.

‘We try to make the sessions tough but enjoyable and we hope that by varying the locations and type of work we do that we will get the most from it. It’s crucial to get through a good amount of work over the summer months. It has been hard work and they have found it tough, but their application has been first class.’
