Manager Nigel Clough has hailed the team following our progression to the semi finals of the Capital One Cup following a one nil victory over Southampton last night.

Marc McNulty won us the tie with his second half winner and speaking to the Official Site the gaffer said it was nothing less than we deserved following the performance we put in against the Premier League side.

‘We approached this cup tie exactly the same as we do in league games, we haven’t had many breaks at home recently, but we thoroughly deserved the one we got for the goal. We don’t focus too much on what the opposition do and don’t do, but our lads to a man were fantastic and they gave everything they had, we couldn’t have asked for anymore.’

A delighted Clough went on to say that if you look at the team who finished the game, we had two lads signed from Ilkeston Town, a 17 year old midfielder who played 81 minutes, a right winger playing right back and a midfielder at centre half, so for him to come out with the result having put in that kind performance makes it even more ‘remarkable’ in his eyes.

With our performance and progress in Cup games in recent years, the manager also feels that sides will now fear facing us because we’ve taken Premiership scalps before and he can’t wait for the draw tonight to see how we can pit our wits against next.

‘Nights like this are very memorable occasions, especially for the players and supporters, but also for everyone else connected with the club. I spoke to Sammy Lee afterwards and he said there aren’t too many teams that would fancy facing us at Bramall Lane in the future and that is what we want.’
