Manager Nigel Clough has said that he saw some very encouraging signs from the performance given our result against Northampton on Tuesday night.

With Andy Butler opening the scoring for us, a Marc Richards penalty brought them back on level terms and that was how the game ended, but speaking to the Official Site following the game Clough was just happy with the improvement following the Burton best forgotten match, and again said at this stage results weren’t that important.

‘We improved a bit from Saturday which was needed. We looked a bit stronger, fitter and sharper so that was good. As expected Northampton provided us with another stern test and we were more competitive than we were at Burton. We were in control for long periods, especially in the first half and Chris Porter had two good chances before we scored from an excellent Ben Davies delivery.’

Clough goes on to say that it was an ‘unfortunate misjudgement’ from George Long that cost us the win ultimately, but apart from the penalty hiccup he felt we defended very well.

Inspite of that though it was a ‘successful exercise’ and he can slowly see the fitness improving as well as our general play and that’s ultimately all it’s about at this stage for the gaffer.

The one downside to the match was the injury to trialist Robbie Crawford and that did mean that Davies had to do the full 90 which wasn’t planned, other than that Clough did get the minutes into people that he wanted.
