Clough – Keep Our Belief

Manager Nigel Clough has called on Sheffield United to keep the belief we showed last season when causing Cup upsets against Premier League opponents.

Tonight we face off against West Ham United in the Capital One Cup second round, and Clough told the Official Site that the players could take huge confidence from the two top flight sides we dispatched last season, and we have every chance of doing that again as long as we play with freedom and perform to our best.

‘The lads have to believe they can do this again and we hope they show no fear. You must always respect your opponents but there’s a difference, it’s a big and important different to show respect rather than playing with fear and being overwhelmed. We are optimistic that our players will handle themselves as they did last season.’

Clough goes on to say that he does feel higher level opponents will be paying us more attention though following our exploits last season, and taking more care and probably underestimating us less – but if that is the case, it still comes down to us to play to our best and make our chances count when they come along as they inevitably will.

Adding that it doesn’t matter how West Ham line up, our focus has to be on us and what we can do and what we can control, and if we do that we have every chance.
