Manager Nigel Clough couldn’t have been more pleased following our most recent pre season friendly.

Taking on Turkish side Fenerbahce at Bramall Lane, United earnt themselves a very good victory with a strong performance and two late goals from Chris Porter and Neill Collins proved to be a very good way to celebrate our 125 years as a club.

The visitors took the early lead in the game, and speaking to the Official Site Clough said in some ways that was a positive for us, because he got to see how we’d react and dig in for the result.

‘Fenerbahce had the majority of the game and were comfortable in position. They were big, strong, technically very good and we knew it would offer us a different type of test from the other pre season fixtures.’

With goalkeeper Mark Howard certainly busy on the day, Clough feels we were unlucky not to score in the first period with the chance that fell to Marc McNulty.

‘The containment aspect of the game was good for us. We had to keep teams quiet at times last season and that was the case here, especially after the early goal was scored. It’s important, at times like that, that you don’t concede another because then it is very difficult to get back in the game. At one nil down you are always in the game and that’s how it played out, the goals from Chris and Neill made it a memorable night.’
