Manager Nigel Clough was delighted to see Sheffield United pick up another victory and all three points in last night’s game against Notts County.

Speaking to the Official Site following the game, Clough explained that it was a hard fought victory for us as County certainly put in a performance they could be happy with, but with Matt Done’s fourth goal in three starts building on Jamie Murphy’s earlier opener it was enough to grant us the victory.

‘It is as good a three points as we have had all season, it was totally different to Bristol City but we knew that would be the case and it was a battle at times. Notts County fight and scrap for everything and that typifies a Shaun Derry side, but give them credit they can play a bit too.’

Having taken the lead the gaffer was however disappointed with the goal we conceded, mainly because he admits it was ‘unfortunate’ and a goal that ‘there wasn’t a great deal we could do to stop’ but he did think our performance in the first half was ‘excellent’.

‘What we have to do now when we are in control like we were, is go on and get a second, because if not they can equalise courtesy of a solitary attack.’

And that was what happened.

Clough went on to say that with Murphy proving himself useful on the left flank, moving him out there was deliberate as it gave Jason Holt the space to support Done, and it’s an old adage for the gaffer now.

‘Get the ball to Jamie and he will do some damage. His goal was almost a flashback to Doncaster, it wasn’t quite as good but it had to be special to beat Roy Carroll from there.’

As the game played on, he described Iain Turner’s save just after half time as proving ‘decisive’ on the night for us, even though it was one of the only things he had to do, because that allowed us to keep the scores level and then go on to win ourselves, because he felt had we gone two one down it would’ve been a different game.

‘The winning goal is so pleasing again, we get to the byline and score from close range. Matt Done has done that three times in two matches and when you think of how many balls were going into the box earlier in the season it just shows the importance of having someone who can get on the end of them.’
