Clough Couldn’t Have Been More Pleased

Manager Nigel Clough had a proud sense of deja vu following our Cup exploits last season as we took another Premier League scalp last night.

A good, solid battle against West Ham saw us go all the way to penalties, and we came out as 5-4 winners without a Tevez in sight to go through to the third round draw.

Speaking to the Official Site following the game, a very happy gaffer said.

‘It was reminiscent of our terrific run in the FA Cup last season. It was backs to the wall at times and we made a number of fantastic last ditch blocks in the second half and extra time. We were reasonably happy with the first half, although we showed too much respect and conceded a poor goal.’

Clough goes on to say there was a good chat at half time about pressuring them more and hassling them better and not showing them that respect in the second period and he couldn’t have been happier to see the players step up and do just that, getting us back into the game.

The real pleasure for him was that he admits at times this season we have looked very disjointed so far, but he feels overall the showing last night was the first time we have looked a proper ‘strong, disciplined and compact’ side and that’s above the mistakes we made in his eyes in the first period, so it’s certainly a very good base to continue building from now.

‘There’s still work to do, a lot to get to where we want to be, but we are moving in the right direction and this victory will boost the confidence.’
