Sheffield United are close to signing the experienced centre-back Ciaran Clark, on a season-long loan from Newcastle, according to Mike McGrarth.

Ciaran Clark would provide great experience and cover for United across the back three, especially for the left-sided centre-back position. The 32 year-old Irishman is no longer seen as a valuable squad member at Newcastle. Clark started 12 times for Newcastle in the Premier League last season.

Bringing in Ciaran Clark would have its many benefits, United currently have four senior centre-backs, so it would add to the defenders depth. Furthermore, this move would allow youngsters Kyron Gordon and Kacper Lopata to go out and gain vital first team experience on loan somewhere.

If the deal gets completed, the Irish defender will look to compete with Jack Robinson for the left-side of the back three, as well as acting as cover for John Egan for the middle spot in the back three.
