Sheffield United’s top-flight meeting with Everton today will be the first time that the two teams have met on Boxing Day
Last year’s Boxing Day entertainment saw the Blades draw 1-1 at home to Watford. On paper it looked a straight-forward victory against a side which were fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table, although they almost did succeed in securing safety from the relegation zone, they put in a brave performance at Bramall Lane.
They had taken the lead on 27 minutes through Gerard Deulofeu’s breakaway goal, but that lead lasted just 9 minutes as Oliver Norwood finished from the penalty spot. Though United could have been condemned for not wrapping this game up after missing earlier opportunities. Oli McBurnie had been thwarted by Hornets keeper Ben Foster, and he later made an excellent save from John Fleck’s point-blank effort in the second half.
Today’s meeting with Everton marks the Blades 102nd league fixture, on this day, since the club was formed in 1889. Thus far they have won 43 and lost 35 games.
Whilst fixtures may have been set out, the British weather has always been a gamble with some of United’s Boxing Day festivities falling foul for different reasons. Lists of postponed clashes are as follows;
