Gary Speed has heaped praise on two of his second-half substitutes after yesterday’s defeat to Coventry City giving both a glowing recommendation.

New boy Andy Reid, and youngster Matt Lowton were both introduced in the second period, and despite being at different ends of the age spectrum, will have encouraged their manager.

Speaking of the more senior player, Speed said:

Reid is a creative player and that is what we have been missing and why he has been brought in. He provided that spark but we weren’t able to make anything of it.

‘He signed too late too be involved in the team from the start because our preparation had already been done.

Reid is currently on loan at Bramall Lane for a month from Premier League Sunderland.

Prior to Reid’s introduction, youngster Matt Lowton was brought on as a half-time substitute for Andy Taylor and put in a sterling display.

‘I have been waiting for a chance to put Matt Lowton in and he is going to be a good player for us.’
