Sheffield United chairman Kevin McCabe has admitted he is unhappy with what he has read in regards to Blade’s boss Neil Warnock who is being strongly linked to the vacant managers job at Portsmouth.

Warnock was made favourite by the bookies to walk into the Pompey hotseat, with George Burley a close second.

However reports later in the week have suggested that Ruud Gullit has already turned down initial approaches and the chairman of Crystal Palace, Simon Jordan, has rejected an approach for Iain Dowie.

McCabe said: ‘What I’ve read is improper. It can cause unrest and I don’t like it. Should we make the Premiership we’d be talking about a new contract for Warnock. If we’re in the Championship we’ll probably extend the old one.’

Warnock meanwhile says he is fed up talking about the rumours and on the contract ‘I can understand our board’s reluctance but enough has been said and it would be going back over old ground.’
