Sheffield United could make a move for Dave Penney following his decision to quit as manager of Doncaster Rovers this morning.

The 42-year-old’s resignation will come as a shock to Rovers fans who were hopeful of reaching the League One play-offs under Penney’s guidance this season.

‘Dave feels he’s taken the club as far as he can. We will not stand in the way of his ambition,’ said Doncaster in a club statement.

Penney, a former Rovers player, transformed the fortunes of Doncaster leading them from the Conference to the upper echelons of League One since taking over in December 2001.

However, a mixed start to the new season, in which Rovers have taken only 5 points from a possible 15 has led to Penney walking away.

It is unclear whether Penney has an immediate job to go too, but if not United could be alerted to his services. Blades boss Neil Warnock is known to be looking to add a senior coach to United’s ranks to assist him and assistant Stuart McCall. Though Penney is likely to harbour ambitions of being a number one, the fact that Warnock’s contract is up in the Summer may make Bramall Lane an attractive destination.

United continue to be linked with a move for former Man Utd number two Brian Kidd, who has decided against following Roy Keane to Sunderland.
