Sheffield United currently lay fifth in the Championship table prior to this weekend’s trip to Ipswich Town. With two consecutive home defeats to their name, Blades supporters know that real investment is needed in January if Chris Wilder is to realise his dream of managing his team to the Premier League.
The Blades were overturned by an experienced West Brom side last Friday night, despite the Blades taking the lead. With the exception of striker Leon Clarke the hosts were at full strength, with Wilder recalling youngster Tyler Smith from his loan spell at Barrow.
Whilst investment is required when the transfer window re-opens in January 2019, and the Sheffield Star have been quick churn the rumour mill and according to their sources, the Blades are interested in bringing in Everton defender Mason Holgate on loan.
The Doncaster born defender, who was formerly with Barnsley will be allowed to leave Goodison Park on loan for the remainder of the season to gain further experience. United will experience competition from Fulham and Derby County, who have also shown an interest.

We don’t know if there is any strength in this rumour but as far as defensive options go, United have a fair selection with Martin Craine, Richard Stearman and Jake Wright available as cover, unless it is Wilder’s plans to play Holgate as a Wing-Back.
I would rather see additional funds be spent on a striker who will put the ball in the back on the net consistently – this is an area in which SUFC lack. They have relied too much on Billy Sharp’s goals and whilst he has made a good return this season, he cannot do it alone!
