Manager Nigel Adkins was far happier this weekend as Sheffield United took victory in the South Yorkshire derby against Doncaster Rovers.

Heading to the Keepmoat Stadium for the match on Saturday, Che Adams’ late first half goal was enough to separate the sides come the full time whistle, and for the gaffer he felt it was a richly deserved win on the day.

It was of course Adams’ first goal since October and with Dominic Calvert-Lewin making his full League One debut, there were plenty of positives for Adkins to take as he spoke to the assembled media in his post game press interviewed.

‘There were many aspects to the victory that were pleasing, but I thought Dom and Louis Reed were both excellent. They have had to be patient and wait for a chance but they both took the opportunity and contributed heavily to a thoroughly deserved away win. As a management team we have a reputation of having the confidence and belief in playing young players and we just had a feeling the time was right to re-introduce two or three. Che Adams looked a genuine threat throughout and took his goal well, whilst Jose Baxter showed what he is capable of playing in his preferred position off the striker and Dean Hammond did all his usual donkey work again. We defended well against the direct threat Doncaster offered meaning George Long was rarely troubled and we saw the game out professionally to gain a good clean sheet too.’

With coming fixtures against both Bury and Port Vale in a tight fixture list once more, Adkins went on to say that momentum would be huge for us if we could pick up nine points from nine available in this run.

‘With three games in a week these three points give us a real boost after losing to Wigan. Now we have to be positive and look for a couple more victories to put us right back in the race for promotion this season. It won’t be easy, there are no easy games in this division, but this squad of players has a genuine belief and resilience within it and hopefully we can now really kick on.’
