There are numerous players out of contract in the summer. Key players at that. However, are United able to renew contracts under an embargo?
It was confirmed last week that Sheffield United have been placed under a transfer embargo. Restricting them from being able to sign a Reda Khadra replacement, and it may also affect the contract extension talks for those with expiring contracts.
According to Transfermarkt these players are said to be out of contract this summer:
- Billy Sharp, 36
- John Fleck, 31
- Wes Foderingham, 32
- Oliver Norwood, 31
- Enda Stevens, 32
- Jack Robinson, 29
- Jack O’Connell, 28
- Ben Osborn, 28
- Oli McBurnie, 26
- Ismaila Coulibaly, 22
- Daniel Jebbison, 19
That’s a large chunk of the squad who are out of contract, and players like Wes Foderingham, Oli McBurnie and Oliver Norwood have been significant members of the starting eleven this season.
The EFL regulations state:
“Clubs can offer new contracts to existing players”,”Though this will be dependent on the circumstances of the individual club and will be determined by the league.”
Of course, If United are able to resolve the situation then this wouldn’t be an issue. But they are in a tricky, technical, predicament. Taking into consideration that they are in the middle of a financial takeover.
Out of those players listed above, and just say United are playing in the Premier League next season, which players would you keep?
