It was being reported late yesterday evening that former Bristol City and Manchester United goalkeeper Luke Steele was now on trial at Sheffield United.

33-year-old Steele left Ashton Gate this summer upon the expiry of his contract and he made ten appearances in his 12-months at the club as he battled No 1 Frank Fielding for the spot between the sticks.

Having come through Peterborough United’s Academy ranks as a youngster, he sealed a reported £500,000 move to Manchester United in the summer of 2002 after spending a couple of months on loan with them where he impressed. Although he failed to make his United debut, he took in loan spells with Coventry City gaining game time and found himself making the switch to West Bromwich Albion in 2006. He was again loaned to Coventry and also Barnsley but he did make two appearances for the Baggies. Having impressed on loan at Barnsley, that became his next destination as he made the switch as a free agent in 2008 and he remained with them until moving to Greece and Panathinaikos in July 2014. He returned to the UK and Bristol City in August 2017.

All in, the experienced stopper boasts well over 300 starting appearances to his name in football and he would be an ideal addition to our goalkeeper unit in my mind.
