Wilder – Deserved Brentford Win

Manager Chris Wilder has said that Sheffield United fully deserved all three points from the Championship opener against Brentford yesterday and he credited the victory to the fans.

Hosting Dean Smith’s side at Bramall Lane for the 2017/18 opener, a first half Billy Sharp strike gave us all three points on the day and Wilder told the Yorkshire Post that it was a ‘reward for (our) outstanding fans’.

‘First and foremost I must talk about our support for the last six years. We’ve had it tough in this city, a football city as it is. That is a reward for the outstanding support, loyalty and love of their football club that they’ve shown through thick and thin. I’ve got to say, I thought that the atmosphere was right up there today. Outstanding effort against a brilliant Brentford side.’

Wilder continued to wax lyrical.

‘The roar that greeted us, the positivity allowed the players to lift their game at times when they were very, very tired. Sheff United fans, they deserved that result today. We’ve all got a point to prove, haven’t we? Whether we’ve not managed in the division or been out of it, players, coaches and staff, are we good enough? Billy’s goalscoring record speaks for itself and I think we’ve created chances today. We didn’t play particularly well with the ball today – we can play a lot better.’

Clearly Wilder will be looking for improvement in the coming weeks in terms of the actual performance itself, but football is about winning games and Sheffield United have their first three points of the season as we return to the second tier and sometimes you have to dig out results and take wins and points even when you’re not at your best.

What counts is the win column for the year sits on one from one.
