Remember when Diego De Girolamo first burst onto the scene at Sheffield United, then he failed to reach his potential and United released him?

The Italian sensation, almost a decade ago, made a real name for himself amongst Sheffield United supporters. After ripping it up in the Blades academy at Shirecliffe, he gradually made his way into the squad for cup games.

In 2015, De Girolamo had a plethora of clubs from across Europe looking at his signature. According to The Scotsman, back in 2015: Celtic, Benfica, Juventus and Southampton were all linked with the talented 19 year-old.

Many of the United faithful still scratch their head to this day, wondering how on earth he fizzled out in the way he did.

Where is he now?

De Girolamo has been playing football at Buxton since 2018, and just a couple of days ago extended his contract with the non league side by a year, with an option of an extra year afterwards, as per the club.

Diego De Girolamo is still only in his made 20’s, but at 26 you’d think he’d have matured a bit by now and gotten a move to a professional side.

Before signing with Buxton in 2018, the Italian had been at seven different clubs. 8th time lucky I guess for Diego.

There has always been a couple of common issues with Diego De Girolamo, dedication and attitude. Those are the two things that have let him down throughout his career. A career that could’ve, and should’ve looked far more different to how it’s actually shaped out.
