What does £16m buy?

In the case of Sheffield United, £16m spent on wages gets you a second 2-2 draw of the season against bottom of the section Colchester. I’m sure most Blades fans will agree with me when I say that’s not good enough, Robson however seemed quite satisfied.

During Warnock’s tenure at the club I followed the Blades to away matches more often than not, when I didn’t I would listen to Radio Sheffield’s commentaries. I always found my childhood hero Keith Edwards a very negative summariser, I assumed this was because he hadn’t been interviewed when he showed an interest in the Blades’ manager’s job. Nowadays, away matches usually find me in front of the radio rather than in the away end, a consequence of Robson’s passion-sapping skills. Edwards was critical but he has nothing on David Holdsworth who seems to spend 90 minutes slagging of the team and the tactics. I can’t help but feel however that he’s just telling it like it is. He summed things up best of all shortly after the game had finished, when asked if this result was good enough for a team with an eye on a top 6 place, he responded ‘Top 6? Whose imagination is that in?’. £16m it seems doesn’t buy you a play-off place or even a semblance of a promotion challenge.

I don’t like to offer comments on performances when I haven’t seen the game myself so I’m going to borrow sharpblades comments which he has posted elsewhere on the site. ‘I have had time to digest events at Layer Road today. I arrived at Colchester at 2.00, feeling confident that we would beat the bottom of the table side. I sat there after 30 mins looking upon the game thinking to myself this is the worst Sheffield United team I have witnessed in 20 years. We are so poor it’s beyond belief. If Robson thinks we deserved to win today he’s on another planet. In truth both teams were poor, but one had experienced internationals and the other had average pros. This is a stark warning to all you who think the Blades are too good to go down, we are not. This team has no style of play, it’s slow (apart from Shelton)and predictable. Colchester will be the worst team we face between now and end of season and we struggled. It is time Mccabe got his head out of his backside and sorted this mess out because if we play like that til end of season we will be doing a Swindon Town. I am shocked that Kilgallon has been replaced by two slow, ageing and clumsey defenders, he must be livid. Well done Shelton you were brilliant today. Robson OUT’

I would imagine many of the 1,000 or so Blades fans who made the long trip share sharpblades views. It is a shame that I feel this way but I can’t help but feel that the victory over Manchester City has done the club more harm than good. Would Robson still be at the club if we’d lost 1-0?
