Sheffield United manager David Weir says he has made his mind up on who will start the season in goal for the blades this season.

Fit again, Mark Howard and young starlet George Long have been in direct competition for the number one jersey this summer and Weir says he is in a great position, with two great goalkeepers at the club.

Speaking on Radio Sheffield, Weir said, “It is a tough decision and I am in a very lucky position to have two very good goalkeepers at the club.

“I have made my decision but I will not let it be known until nearer the first game on Friday.”

Howard was the regular goalkeeper at the start of last season but a serious thigh injury saw him ruled out from October.

Long took his opportunity to shine in the first team. In his first month in the side, he was voted the League One Player of the Month.

He went on to make 44 appearances last season, he was voted the clubs Young Player of the Year, and he also picked up the Achievement of the season award.

His form also saw him be part of the England under-20 squad for the World Cup finals in July.

Both have featured in pre-season and both were given 90 minutes each in the final two games of pre-season. Long played against Atromitos on Friday night whilst Howard played in the game at York City the following day.

The blades are in a great position with goalkeepers with third choice goalkeeper George Willis earning plaudits last season. He earned a call-up to the England under-19 squad and he was also shortlisted for the Football League apprentice of the year.
