Neil Warnock has turned down the advances of Portsmouth and decided to stay at Bramall Lane.

The 57 Sheffield United boss has been strongly linked to the managers job vacated by Alain Perrin and the Blades board ‘reluctantly’ gave him permission to talk to Milan Madaric. However Warnock has decided to continue his six year association with Utd.

Chairman Kevin McCabe told the official site: ‘We are delighted that Neil Warnock’s future remains with Sheffield United. This is a club with enormous potential, determined to satisfy the Premiership aspirations of fans, players, coaching staff and its team manager. It is true to say I wish the Portsmouth saga had not started.’

Adding: ‘But in the end the outcome in this case demonstrates the importance of the relationship between a chairman and a team manager. Together with my fellow directors and senior management team, I have been able to show to Neil ? and he has recognised ? that he has a key role in helping shape our quest for the top flight of English football.’

Warnock said: ‘I had a chat with Milan last night and sorted it out. I think all the speculation has not done anybody any good. It was a mutual thing, my heart would not have been in it and I wished him all the best. I told the players this morning and they are delighted, especially as it’s been a very difficult week. I made my mind up last night at 8pm having spoken to my wife and kids about it and they are very, very happy. Milan had offered me a super deal but it just did not feel right and that’s the way I am. We decided to announce it today because I was not prepared to wait until Monday.’

Mandaric told Sky Sports News they will now turn their attention to Harry Rednapp to try to take him back to Fratton Park ‘We are going to approach Southampton today and ask for permission to talk to Harry.’ He will also re-approach Glasgow Rangers for the second time to ask permission to speak to McLeish.
