Sheffield United have been dealt a severe blow after new loan signing Simon Walton was ruled out for the season.

Walton, who joined the Blades last week on a season-long loan from Plymouth Argyle was stretchered off during the first half of the Blades 1-0 defeat at Mansfield Town on Saturday.

After last season’s injury nightmares, this will have been an added blow to Kevin Blackwell who is already suffering a shortage of numbers at the back.

‘It is a tragedy for the lad because he was going to give this chance his best shot. He won’t play for us now because his loan will be up by the time he recovers. We are now talking to Plymouth about where Simon will do his rehab.’

United will now be looking to draft in a replacement, with just Chris Morgan, Andy Taylor, Johannes Ertl and Rob Kozluk at the club.
