Vital Season In Review: March

Despite suffering an inconsistent start to 2010, the Blades still sat comfortably in seventh with the play-offs within their grasp.

However, a dreadful start to March, saw 1-0 defeats at both Crystal Palace and Peterborough. The game at Peterborough was made even worse by injuries suffered to Ched Evans and Jamie Ward, effectively ruling them out for the rest of the season.

The disappointing times weren’t over there, as they were held 1-1 at Bramall Lane by QPR, with Richard Cresswell again getting on the scoresheet for United.

They finally got back to winning ways in the game against promotion chasing Blackpool. Cresswell grabbed a brace, but was upstaged by an eighteen yard screamer/scuffed shot into the bottom corner by Nick Montgomery.

It proved to be the only victory in March as things went from bad to… mediocre. James Harper grabbed a very late equaliser against Doncaster Rovers, and Stephen Quinn did the same at the Cardiff City stadium three days later, making it two 1-1 draws in a week.

An error by Nyron Nosworthy allowed Paul Hayes to score what proved the only goal of the game for Scunthorpe United at Bramall Lane. On a brighter note, Darius Henderson returned from injury, an encouraging sight, after Stephen Quinn had to be used as an emergency striker in South Wales.

Player of the month: Nick Montgomery – Not just for ‘that’ goal, but as the Blades has to pull together and fight through every game, Nick Montgomery epitomised everything expected from the fans. The only problem for United was that he couldn’t do it all alone.
