Tuesday 18th April 2017 – LEAGUE ONE
Bolton Wanderers v Bury 20:00
Sheffield United’s already secured promotion was followed up by confirmation of the title on Sunday when Bolton were beaten at Oldham, following on from an earlier Blades win. Bradford still have hopes of finishing in the top-two but will have to get a victory at Bramall Lane to keep alive these hopes.
Wimbledon v Peterborough will be a fixture again next season as both will remain in League 1 – the Dons could move above the Posh into 11th if the win at Kingsmeadow.
A Good Friday defeat for Bristol Rovers probably ended their top-six hopes so they’ll stay in this division into next season – this is Oldham’s aim too, with these chances improved after a victory over Bolton took them six points above the bottom-four.
Charlton should be safe from relegation but an Addicks defeat against visiting Gillingham – four points above the relegation zone and unbeaten in two – could see them dragged back into a dogfight.
Two wins in three has brought Fleetwood back into automatic promotion contention – another against play-off hopefuls Millwall, sixth, could take this potential three-team race down to the wire? The Lions’ four game unbeaten run has seen them open up a point advantage over Southend, seventh.
Northampton haven’t won in five but still hold a six point lead over the bottom-four. Shrewsbury’s two unbeaten has taken them out of the relegation zone up to 19th, two points above Port Vale.
A top-10 finish is what Oxford are looking to secure having slipped out of play-off contention – that would be taken by relegation threatened Port Vale, who are a point from safety after a three game losing run.
With Rochdale six off the play-off zone with three to play a win is a must for Dale to have any chance of finishing in the top-six, which is probably unlikely. Coventry had relegation confirmed on Good Friday so are now playing for pride.
Scunthorpe could have a play-off place secured should they beat Chesterfield – and other results go their way. Anything but a win for the second-bottom Spireites and they’ll join Coventry in League 1. However, a victory probably isn’t going to be enough ultimately with them nine points from safety and only nine points to play for and an inferior goal difference.
A Southend win and they could move back into the top-six, should Millwall, sixth, fail to collect all three points. MK Dons will look to damage the Shrimpers’ hopes with a win to react to a first defeat in six.
Walsall are six without a win ahead of the visit of relegation threatened Swindon. The Robins could move out of the bottom-four if they extend an unbeaten run to five with a victory against the Saddlers.
Having seen the slim title hopes ended on Sunday, Bolton – beaten at Oldham – look to react to keep the Trotters’ automatic promotion hopes in their own hands. Bury go to the Macron Stadium aiming to end a three game losing run – the Shakers are five without a win – that would ensure they’ll be out of the bottom-four with two to play.
It goes without saying the expectation; most definitely the hope at least, will be for a positive result. But will this happen? We’ll find out soon enough.
