Oldham Athletic v Bolton Wanderers 12:30
Bury have a chance to open up a four point gap between themselves and the bottom four if they – having failed to win in four, including back-to-back defeats – can overcome the visit of Rochdale on Thursday evening. Dale, ninth, are unlikely to make it into the top six but victory at Gigg Lane could move them to within three points of Millwall – who would have a game in hand – with three to play.
A Bradford, joint-third with Fleetwood, victory over Oxford with other results going for the Bantams – who have an impressive home record – would see them secure a play-off place. The U’s are going to fall short of this but will still want a positive end to the season – having lost in the final of the EFL Trophy recently.
Chesterfield, almost certain for the drop anyway, could have relegation confirmed if they lose to Southend – looking to end a run of back-to-back defeats that’s cost the Shrimpers a top six position – at the Proact Stadium.
Three wins in four has improved Coventry’s form but it’s too little too late with the bottom-side poised to have relegation confirmed this weekend – staving this off a week ago. Charlton’s own League 1 safety is nearly secured, recording a first win in six after three straight defeats last time round. A victory at the Ricoh Arena should just about do it.
Five without a win for Gillingham – including four defeats – sees the Gills just a place and a point above Port Vale, 21st, outside of the bottom four. Bristol Rovers could push them into the relegation zone with a victory – this would also keep alive the Pirates’ outside hopes of a top-six finish.
Three without defeat has taken Millwall, sixth, into the fourth and final play-off spot above Southend. If the Lions record a win over visiting Northampton – four without a win – this play-off spot will be retained whatever happens elsewhere.
MK Dons will aim to extend their unbeaten run to five when play-off hopefuls Scunthorpe come to the stadium:mk. The Irons’ recent results would suggest a home win – they’ll keep a top-six place regardless but defeat could see this cut to a mere point.
A disappointing season for Peterborough sees Posh merely playing for a top 10 finish now, the play-offs are long gone. Fleetwood’s automatic promotion bid has faded in recent weeks but the Cod Army, third, still hold a six points advantage over seventh-placed Southend.
Port Vale welcome already prompted Sheffield United to Vale Park hoping to secure the win – a point could be enough – to take them out of the relegation zone. However, the Blades could confirm the League 1 title with a win should Bolton fail to do so on Saturday – basically if they better the Trotters’ result (unless both lose) the championship is secured.
Having won for a first time in seven Shrewsbury moved out of the relegation zone. The Shrews, 19th, would remain at least a point above the bottom-four should they manage another three points from the visit of midtable Walsall – without a win in five.
Should Swindon extended their unbeaten run to four – with a third win in this period – it’s possible the Robins’ goal difference could take them out of the relegation zone. Visitors Wimbledon, 13th, look to avoid a third straight defeat.
Oldham have to wait until Saturday lunchtime to face neighbours Bolton. The Latics, 17th and three above the drop zone heading into the weekend, bid to extend a run of just one defeat in six. A failure to win at Boundary Park and the second-placed Trotters’ outside chances of winning the title could be over – the gap between them and the chasing pack could also shrink too, making for a nervy final three games.
It goes without saying the expectation; most definitely the hope at least, will be for a positive result. But will this happen? We’ll find out soon enough.
