Sheffield United, in the wake of claiming the League 1 title, have confirmed the release of Marc McNulty and Stefan Scougall, but options on several others, including captain Billy Sharp, have been taken up.

McNulty, 24, was on the fringes of Chris Wilder’s first team this season after a loan at Portsmouth in 2015-16, he also had a loan with Bradford earlier in this campaign. The forward departs having scored 10 goals in 40 league games.

Joining McNulty in leaving Bramall Lane is Scougall, also 24, who had been involved in 76 league games for United, scoring seven times.

Matt Done, Chris Hussey and James Wilson remain under contract at United but aren’t seen as part of Wilder’s first team plans in the Championship, as a result the trio have been transfer listed.

One year options in the contracts of Sharp, who scored 30 goals this season, Kieron Freeman, Jake Wright, Chris Basham and Paul Coutts have been taken up.

Finally, Jay O’Shea, who signed a short-term deal until the end of the 2016-17 season when arriving from Chesterfield in January, has been offered an extended deal.

Wilder told the Official Website: ‘As I’ve said on numerous occasions, the whole squad have contributed to our success. I’d like to thank all the players for their 100 per cent commitment and wish those leaving the club all the best in the future.’
