Toughest Test Yet For Clough

Manager Nigel Clough has said that our trip to Deepdale to face Preston North End will be our toughest test yet in the league this season.

Speaking to the Official Site ahead of the game, Clough explained that he thought Simon Grayson’s side would be strong contenders for a top six place come the end of the season, so United will certainly have a battle on their hands this weekend.

‘Preston are a club that have been building year on year for the past two or three seasons. They are edging ever closer to promotion and will be disappointed they didn’t get over the line last term, but each season they are banging on the door and their time probably isn’t far away.’

Clough goes on to say that generally Deepdale is a difficult ground to go to, and we only have to look back to last season because he knows we played nowhere near our best on that day, and in some ways were lucky to come away with a scoreless draw, however it’s not all about them – Preston will know equally just how good we can be when we fire on all cylinders as we have plenty of threats ourselves.

With both clubs having midweek games in the Cup, whilst he acknowledges they made a few more changes than we did and didn’t have to travel to London, he believes the boys will be in great confidence ahead of the game and will take the momentum from Tuesday into the weekend game and we will be looking to build on our last few results.

The gaffer also said he’d called on the team to give one last big effort ahead of the international break, so we go into that with a positive result and the confidence that continues to bring to the players, because obviously everybody can then have a good rest and recuperate and there’s nothing worse than a sparse fixture list when you’ve tasted defeat.

‘If we can go into the break with three consecutive league wins, then that will be excellent progress and give us something to build on when we return to action against Rochdale in September.’
