Sheffield United travel to Anfield, to face current Premier League champions, Liverpool, still searching for their first win of the season. They did, however, claim their first point in a ‘gripping’ 1-1 draw with Fulham last weekend.

Gaining maximum points at home to Fulham was vital, with the prospect of Liverpool, Manchester City, and Chelsea as the Blades next three opponents. There won’t be many pundits who will be predicted a United victory from these fixtures.

Chris Wilder’s side wasted numerous first-half chances, and when they did get the ball in the back of the net, the goal was ruled out for off-side. Aleksandar Mitrović wasted a beautiful opportunity to net the game’s first goal when he blasted his penalty against the bar, which looped over the top after Jack Robinson unexplainably handballed in the box.

Ademola Lookman took the lead on 77 minutes as he stormed into the box to drive past Aaron Ramsdale, and with five minutes remaining Mitrović turned villain when he fouled Robinson in the box and Billy Sharp smashed home the resulting penalty.

Sheffield United was boosted by the return of defender John Egan, and striker David McGoldrick, for the draw with Fulham last weekend. The Irish defender had missed the Republic of Ireland’s last international after he self-isolated after coming into contact with a team-mate who had tested positive for coronavirus. McGolrick had also returned from the Ireland squad with a groin injury but was passed fit to face Fulham. It is anticipated that the pair will again be involved in the squad at Anfield.

However, they will continue to be without defender Jack O’Connell (knee), and French striker Lys Moussett (ankle), through injury. Both are expected to be sidelined for some time.
