There Are Wilder Suggestions Than Chris

Whilst it appears that Gary Speed is set to be named as the new manager of Sheffield United, there are the other candidates who have been brandished around pubs in Sheffield, and the internet over the weekend.

The one that has picked up the most momentum is that of former Hull City boss Phil Brown who has been out of work since leaving the Tigers earlier this year. His odds were slashed on Sunday afternoon, after he received some backing at the bookies.

The popular choice amongst many would the Doncaster boss Sean O’Driscoll, who, despite having never managed a team with the reputation of United, is proven at working successfully to a budget in the Championship.

Many Blades fans will remember Chris Wilder, who had two spells with United and is a real prospect as an upcoming manager. The full-back, had a successful spell with Halifax Town despite the situation the club were in, and more recently got Oxford United back into the football league.

Former Coventry boss Chris Coleman has been mentioned by some, who see him as an ideal replacement, and not for the first time, former Newcastle star Alan Shearer has been talked about, although it’s highly unlikely he would be willing to take the position (number 2 perhaps?)

However, the name on everybody’s lips, is former Villa boss Martin O’Neill. With the imminent investment expected at the club, it’s believed by many that a lucrative deal was offered to O’Neill, and with two weeks of the tranfer window remaining, he will be given unlimited funds to build a squad capable of reaching the Premier League (we can all dream).
