The fortress is still standing

Let’s try and empathise with our Sheffield neighbours for a moment. They must feel like the fat kid whose ice cream slides out of his cone just as he’s about to tuck in. I can only guess just how gutting it must’ve been for them to see our England international striker rifle one in the top corner with victory almost in their grasp.

I thought the Blades were utterly dominant in the first half and couldn’t believe we’d gone in trailing. In the second half we didn’t seem to quite reach the same heights and it was a hammer blow to go 2-0 down.

The Blades are made of strong stuff under Blackwell though and the comeback was decisive. Richard Wood put through his own net before Beattie’s late thunderbolt.

That goal has finally won Beattie a place in the hearts of those, like me, who’ve struggled to come to terms with his huge salary. If (when?) he does move on in the summer, he’ll be sadly missed.

I never thought that I’d say a draw at home to Wednesday was a good result but it didn’t half feel like one in the circumstances. With Wednesday looking likely to slip into the third tier again, it might be a long time before they get their next chance to end their shameful run of results at Bramall Lane.
