Goalkeeper Ian Bennett has become the second Blades player out of contract to join Lee Clark’s Huddersfield Town on a free transfer.

Bennett who saw his chances at Bramall Lane limited this season despite many questions over the goalkeeping situation.

Despite wanting to stay with United where he had been involved in coaching the youth team goalkeepers, Kevin Blackwell refused to offer him a playing deal, leading to him wanting to play his football elsewhere.

Bennett, 38, now joins up with former Newcastle United teammate and United colleague Gary Naysmith who joined the West Yorkshire side last week.

Boss Clark said: ‘I wanted someone to provide Alex Smithies with genuine competition and Ian will do that.

He has bags of experience, knowledge and know-how that our young goalkeepers will benefit from massively each day in training.’

The Blades currently have just Estonian goalkeeper Mihkel Aksalu at their disposal after seeing Paddy Kenny, Justin Haber and Bennett leave, although a deal for Stoke’s Steve Simonsen is reportedly just ‘a matter of time.’
