Goalkeeper Ian Bennett has become the second Blades player out of contract to join Lee Clark’s Huddersfield Town on a free transfer.

Bennett who saw his chances at Bramall Lane limited this season despite many questions over the goalkeeping situation.

Despite wanting to stay with United where he had been involved in coaching the youth team goalkeepers, Kevin Blackwell refused to offer him a playing deal, leading to him wanting to play his football elsewhere.

Bennett, 38, now joins up with former Newcastle United teammate and United colleague Gary Naysmith who joined the West Yorkshire side last week.

Boss Clark said: ‘I wanted someone to provide Alex Smithies with genuine competition and Ian will do that.

He has bags of experience, knowledge and know-how that our young goalkeepers will benefit from massively each day in training.’

The Blades currently have just Estonian goalkeeper Mihkel Aksalu at their disposal after seeing Paddy Kenny, Justin Haber and Bennett leave, although a deal for Stoke’s Steve Simonsen is reportedly just ‘a matter of time.’

  • Really pleased Benno has got a decent contract, very well deserved, a nice guy and a real professional, unlike the trator he played second fiddle to during most of his time at BDTBL.

  • Bloody right Glouc and Kop – just a bit worried though about lack of replacement between sticks – hope Simmo deal a certainty – surely KB is not going to leave us without a serious replacement for much longer!?

  • He never recovered after that howler against Port Vale in the silly cup. Good guy to have around, shame he went.

  • he was no use to us one bit which was proved last season….just not good enough and too old at championship level. not bothered about simmonsen as he’s nearly 32…would like to see us go in for alex smithies at huddersfield as we seem to be all of a sudden developing a good relationship with them!!

  • As I recall, the player Benno was second fiddle to last season was no good to us either after his stupid antics. Have you gone off Speroni now BFL?

  • never going to get him in a million years glouc thats the issue….bet blackwell hasn’t even thought of going in for speroni. we want a good young keeper that we can relay on for years to come…speroni or smithies fits the bill nicely. simmo was good for us but i thought he was 26 as previouslly reported and not almost 32.

  • you know summat glouc…..i ******** HATE kenny with a passion, he will get slaughtered when he comes back to the lane…bet he’s dreading it!

  • I think there are many thousands who share your opinion on Kenny, I am also looking forward to welcoming him back to BDTBL! Steve Simonsen is only just 31, not that it matters, but keepers are better with experience and as you know usually play on several years after outfield players. I hope Birch can get him.

  • Yes, I hope Kenny is dreading his return, I also look forward to giving him some stick at Loftus Road where the fans are close to the players, no doubt the lower tier of the away end will be full for that game.

  • he’ll not be dreading it lads, he’ll thrive on it…..be a bit different as glou says at qpr when he’ll actually hear little comments – that game we can really wind him up for 45 minutes!

  • Disagree there bfl i think simonsen will be a great adittion to the squad and keepers getter better with experiance and keepers go on till at least 39yrs old but theres no chance of going in for smithies from huddersfield for 2 reasons 1. they are paying him massive wages to keep him there and 2 there building a squad to get up to the cahmpionship with the likes of naysmith. Also heard that ikeme was seen in sheffiled over the weekend.

  • i no bfl i dont want ikeme either 1 ov relatives saw him near the bbc sheffield studio over the weekend. theres alot better than him around and just read 1.2m offer accepted for surman

  • surman would be an excelent signing..1.2m is a bit steep though. would like to see halford back too.

  • apparently there’s doubts over simonsen signing now…apparently he’s signing for blackpool but nothing concrete
