Summer Release List

Well the only two senior players to be released in the summer are Paul Gerrard and Geoff Horsfield. Here’s a look at there releases and the youth players to that are leaving.

Paul Gerrard

Not the first time we’ve released him, but this time will be his last. He was reliable enough as a third keeper but with the supposed arrival of Dean Brill from Luton then we would have four goalkeepers. No real surprise then that Gerrard has been sacrificed first.

Will probably end up: League 1 or 2 or even as backup for a Championship side

Geoff Horsfield

Much like Gerrard this one was to be expected, and not a moment too soon. It was a mistake of a signing and would have been gone last year if Bryan Robson hadn’t decided to keep him on another year.

Will probably end up: Probably in League 1. His loan spell at Scunthorpe didn’t really produce much, so League 1 perhaps beckons.

James Ashmore

Captained the reserve team on numerous occasions this year and was showing promise at the start of the season. He plays well when he sits in front of the defence and has an excellent passing range. Unfortunately he lacked the strength to make it to Championship level.

Will probably end up: League 2 maybe. He had success at Macclesfield on loan, and I think someone will take a gamble with Ashmore.

Martin Donnelly

Young winger who was capped by Northern Ireland’s youth team. Showed promise in the reserves during our promotion year but has been fairly quiet since

Will probably end up: Blue Square League. Not quite ready for the competitiveness and strength of league football.

Stephen Hernandez

Young Goalkeeper who had a loan spell at Worksop Town.

Will probably end up: Back at Worksop or at a team who play at a similar level

Lloyd Kerry

A central midfielder who was prominent in the reserves. He had a couple of loan spells, last year at Torquay and more recently with his hometown club Chesterfield where he got 2 goals in 13 games for the Spireites.

Will probably end up: Back in
League 2 either with Chesterfield or another team willing to take a chance.

Dean Oliver

A centre forward who like most of the above mentioned have shown promise in the reserves but not enough potential to make that step up. Made 2 appearances on loan at Halifax Town this year but failed to make an impression.

Will probably end up: The same route as Colin Marrison and Dominic Roma who also failed to make the grade. The Blue Square North is his most likely his next stop.
