Sheffield United chief executive Julian Winter says the club still have to interview some candidates but he is sure that the new appointment will be the best one for the club.

United have been without a manager since Danny Wilson was dismissed on April 11th. Chris Morgan took over as caretaker manager for the remainder of the season with the club losing out in the play-offs.

Morgan took charge of his last game on May 6th and the club have been searching for a new boss since.

A number of candidates have ruled themselves out of the running. Stuart McCall, Karl Robinson and Graham Arnold have all been linked with the post and have stated that they do not want to be considered for the vacant position.

Whilst most clubs are already busy preparing for next season, United have yet to reveal their released and retained list or any pre-season friendlies, with the players due to return to training in less than three weeks` time.

Winter says they are aware it is taking a long time but they are confident the new boss, when eventually named, will be the right man for the job. Speaking on the official website , Winter said, ‘We always knew it was likely to take some time but we are confident that our choice will be the right way forward for this club.

‘We still have got some more interviews and will then look to appoint from the strong line-up of candidates.’

United came in for particular criticism from Graham Arnold after being interviewed for the job. The former national manager of Australia recently won the Australian A league with Central Coast Mariners and he met with the United board recently but he walked away dumbfounded, saying he would have been taking three steps backwards had he taken the job.

Former Portsmouth, Blackpool and Blackburn Rovers manager Michael Appleton is the current favourite for the job.
