Sheffield United boss David Weir says his new look squad are straining at the leash and cannot wait for the new season, which kicks off on Friday night.

The blades will enjoy a national audience when they welcome the Sky TV cameras for their live game with Notts County, a game chosen by the Football League to mark the 125th anniversary of the league.

Weir has brought in six new players to the squad this summer and they have helped the side remain unbeaten in pre-season with five wins and three draws.

Speaking in the Sheffield Telegraph , Weir said, “The real stuff starts now and the lads are straining at the leash. We`ve just got to keep them on it for a little bit longer and then we can let them go.

“By and large we are happy with how things have gone so far but there are still things we want to work on. But we feel as if we`re moving in the right direction.”

“For a footballer, nothing beats going out there and playing games and that`s what the boys are desperate to do now.”

Weir will be hoping his new side can gain one of the two automatic promotion places at the end of the season in his first full season in management.

Last season, the blades lost out in the play offs for a second season in a row and they will be looking to avoid the end of season lottery.
