New Sheffield United manager David Weir says it just felt right after taking up the challenge of trying to lead United to promotion from League One.

Weir replaces Danny Wilson as United boss after Wilson was dismissed in April and he will try to lead the blades to promotion at the third time of asking after the club missed out in the play-offs in the past two seasons.

The 43-year-old met the media at Bramall Lane today and he spoke exclusively to Sky Sports News.

“You get a feeling about a club and the situation and it just felt right,” Weir told Sky Sports News .

“It is a great opportunity for me. It is my first job in management, hopefully I can stay in it for a long time and it felt like the right place to start.

“I am excited by the challenge. I know the situation with what has gone on and I know where we want to be.

“We have been a League One club for a couple of years now and we all know where we want to be. The ambition is obvious and we know what division we want to be in but we have to realise where we are now. We have to put something in place to get us there and something that is sustainable.

“I am under no illusions about the challenges that will face us but I am very excited about them.”

Weir will now start planning for the new season with the players due to return for pre-season training in three weeks` time.

The former Scotland international also went on to say that he will be given the young players a chance at Bramall Lane.

The blades relied heavily on the youngsters last season. 19-year-old goalkeeper George Long made 44 appearances, whilst 20-year-old defender Harry Maguire made 53 appearances.

Joe Ironside, Callum McFadzean, Diego De Girolamo and Elliott Whitehouse are all under 20 and made the breakthrough into the first team last season.

Weir will find out next Friday (June 19th), who will be first up for United next season when the Football League fixtures are released.
