Sheffield United academy coach David Unsworth is tipping his former Everton teammate and new United manager David Weir to be a big hit at Bramall Lane.

Unsworth played alongside Weir at the heart of the Everton defence for five years at Goodison Park and the pair also did their UEFA coaching badges together. Unsworth, who stepped up to assist Chris Morgan with the first team following the departure of Danny Wilson in April is tipping Weir to be a very good manager, as he cuts his teeth in football management at Bramall Lane.

“David is a great football man and also a great bloke,” Unsworth told the Sheffield Telegraph.

“He`s got all the credentials to become a very, very good manager and I`m convinced he`s going to be a big hit here.

“I know David well. Not only from being at Everton but also because we did our UEFA Pro Licence together too.”

Unsworth, who helped United win promotion to the Premier League during his playing days, had been widely tipped for the vacant manager`s position at Kilmarnock.

The Scottish Premier League side approached United last week to speak to Unsworth about the vacancy at Rugby Park but it is believed that the 39-year-old will remain at Bramall Lane to nurture the future stars of the club.
