Sheffield United caretaker manager Chris Morgan says he would still like to lead the side next season after seeing his side once again lose out in the agony of the play-offs.

The blades once again lost out in the play-offs and they now need to start to re-build as they get ready for a third season in League One.

Morgan has been in charge at Bramall Lane since Danny Wilson was sacked by the club following their defeat to Crawley Town last month and despite missing out on promotion, Morgan says he wants to lead the club next season. “I have spoken to the chairman and he knows I want the job,” Morgan told BBC Radio Sheffield.

“I want the privilege to work with that group of players and carry on working for this football club.

“I feel with the staff I have got and the players I feel we could come back next season and mount a challenge.

“I do want the job. I have to sit down with Kevin McCabe and Dave Green and talk about it.”

The blades had their destiny in their own hands when Morgan took over from Wilson with five games of the normal season remaining.

United won his first game in charge against Swindon Town 2-0 at Bramall Lane but they then picked up just two points from their remaining four games to finish in fifth place. The blades took a slender lead into the second leg at Yeovil today but they went out after losing 2-0 at Huish Park, 2-1 on aggregate.

Former player Stuart McCall is the current favourite for the job at Bramall Lane. McCall helped Motherwell finish second in the Scottish Premier League this season and he is currently 5/2 for the job.
