Sheffield United defender Tony McMahon has been boosted by the news that he will not require surgery on the Achilles injury that saw him miss the end of the season.

McMahon has seen a specialist who says the defender will not require surgery to sort out the problem that forced him to miss the final two games of the regular season as well as the play-off semi-final against Yeovil Town.

He played through the pain barrier with the injury for most of the second half of the season until he was forced off after an hour in the penultimate away game of the season at Portsmouth.

McMahon doesn`t expect to be back in full training until the eve of the new season admitting the injury will not be a quick fix.

‘I went to London to see the specialist again last Wednesday and the good news is I don’t need further injections or to wear a protective boot,’ McMahon told the club’s official website.

‘The plan now and throughout the summer is to do plenty of strengthening work. But it isn’t going to be a quick fix, it will still be the back end of pre-season when I am fully fit.”
