Sheffield United have approached Motherwell about their manager Stuart McCall for the vacant position at Bramall Lane.

Motherwell chief executive Leeann Dempster told STV: ‘I can confirm we had an approach from Sheffield United regarding Stuart McCall last night.’

The Scottish Premier League side have just finished their season, finishing second to champions Glasgow Celtic and earning a place in next seasons qualifying stages of the Champions League for the second season in a row.

McCall enjoyed three seasons playing for Sheffield United under Neil Warnock. He made 90 appearances for the club, helping them reach both the semi-finals of both the FA and League Cup and a championship play-off final during that time.

After retiring from playing, he remained with United on the coaching staff, he led the reserve team to the league title during his time at Bramall Lane, and he was assistant to manager Neil Warnock as the side won promotion to the Premier League in 2006.

McCall has spent two-and-a-half years with Motherwell, guiding them away from trouble at the bottom of the SPL in his first half season, finishing sixth.

His first full season in charge saw them finish third before going one better this season with a second placed finish.

United have already stated that they have seven candidates for the vacant position and that interviews have already been taking place.
