Richard Cresswell was on target once again to head in the single goal that claimed all three points for Sheffield United.

It makes it three goals in as many games for the striker, recruited from Stoke City, and puts the Blades back in the play-off positions.

After a sloppy first half hampered by referee D’urso’s eagreness with the whistle, the Blades took control and despite a penalty appeal, limited the visitors to half chances from distance.

Kevin Blackwell made just one change from the side that advanced past QPR in the FA Cup replay, with Kyle Walker returning to the side in place of Derek Geary.

The Blades had a penalty shout of their own turned down when Walker’s header into the area appeared to bounce up and hit Robson on the arm, but D’urso had a perfect view of the incident and refrained from pointing to the spot.

It wasn’t until the second 45 that the game livened up, and it was the Blades who took the game by the scruff of the neck as they pushed for victory.

Walker’s centre bypassed everybody and the atmosphere in Bramall Lane. The pressure finally paid off on 56 minutes. Andy Taylor and Stephen Quinn contrived to create a better angle from a free-kick and Taylor’s cross was met by Cresswell whose header was helped in by goalkeeper Danny Coyne.

Both sides had big penalty appeals turned down shortly after. Seip and Walker combined to bring down Aliadiere, before Evans pounced on a back-pass before going down under Chris Riggott’s challenge.

Evans then controlled a Cresswell cross, but the onrushing Harper couldn’t keep his effort down.

The final chance of the game fell to Henri Camara; the substitute allowed to play on after Harper had been brought down, but his placed shot was tipped onto the post by Coyne.

Blades:
