Sheff Utd’s bid to ensure that we secure a play-off place was given a huge boost on Tuesday with a comprehensive four-nil win over struggling Scunthorpe United.

The Bramall Lane win saw us open up a six-point lead on seventh placed Barnsley, to consolidate our fifth place in the League 1 table – the defeat for Scunthorpe leaves them just a point clear of the relegation zone though!

An early breakthrough helped calm the nerves, probably not only of the players but settle the home crowd too, as Holt (14) fired home from 25-yards past Scunthorpe’s ‘keeper Daniels, to open the scoring. Holt also went close again, but his effort was blocked to safety.

Scunthorpe offered little threat and with half time approaching, when Flynn was fouled by Scunthorpe defender Clarke, we had the chance to double the lead from the penalty spot. Baxter (40) was the man with the responsibility and, as he rarely does, he made no mistake in beating Daniels to make it two at the break.

A freekick, as it had in the first half that we deflected away from safety with the wall doing it’s job, provided Scunthorpe with the best chance in the second half but van Veen’s effort again wasn’t of any real threat as it went wide.

If there was any doubt about us winning this was put to bed when we moved into the final 10-minutes as Freeman’s pass set up Murphy (81) who did the rest. When Scunthorpe defender Llera, who collected his second yellow card in the process, brought down McNulty in the area we had another penalty – Baxter (85) scored again to seal the convincing four-nil win.
