Clinical finishing was the difference between the two sides last night, as the Blades went through to the Carling Cup 2nd Round at the expense of Chesterfield.

A brace from Jon Stead and another form Danny Webber was enough to see the Blades beat local rivals Chesterfield 3-1.

The Blades took the lead in the match after only 14 minutes, as Webber’s shot was parried, Carney neatly flicked the ball to STEAD, who produced a clinical finish into the corner.

However, having gained the lead, the Blades conceded an equaliser straight away for the second time in three days.

Former Blade Jack LESTER was the man who grabbed the equaliser for the visitors, as he reacted quickest to a cross to head the ball past Kenny.

Chesterfield played the far better football throughout the first half but were behind again right on half time.

Bromby’s long ball found the chest of STEAD and the striker scored his second as he coolly slotted the ball past the advancing Roche.

The second half saw a big improvement from United, as they found more rhythm and more men with their passes.

The Blades finally had some breathing space on 55 minutes as Armstrong found WEBBER on the edge of the box and the striker sent a low shot into the bottom left corner of the net.

Chesterfield rallied late on but were unable to grab a goal back and put United under any serious pressure.
