Well seeing as we’ve been playing the waiting game for football to come back, we might as well play another waiting game whilst we’re at it.

Sheffield United’s hunt for European football is set to get a little more interesting in the coming weeks, as Manchester City’s appeal for their two-year ban from European football will be heard on 8th June, and the procedure is set to take around three days to be complete.

Looking at the league table (yes I know it’s Wikipedia, but they’re the only people I could find that have it illustrated this way), the league is set up in a very intriguing manner depending on the outcome of the decision.

At the moment, if we were to win our game in hand on Manchester United then we would go above them and into 5th place, enough for a Champions League space as things stand. If Manchester City are successful however, then to get into a Champions League place, we’d need to also close the gap and then leapfrog Chelsea, who we still have to play at some point later in the season.

Where will the Blades end the season?

What’s also going to be important, is that hopefully we’ll have some level of clarification of where things are as the season goes on, that way we’ll know what we’re playing for.

It would be a bit of an anti-climax for instance if we were to finish 5th in the league, think we’d qualified for the Champions League only to be told a few weeks later that it wasn’t the case. Not saying the Europa League is bad, but it is still a step-down.

Either way, it’s set to be an exciting end to the season, and hopefully the Blades can end up on the right side of the line when all is said and done.

Looking at the remaining fixtures, it will be difficult to see united finishing in a position to qualify for any European football.
