This isn’t a rule that will directly affect Sheffield United too much on the face of it, at least based on the way they used it during the last campaign.

But it will certainly have an effect on the season as a whole, and could very well come back to bite us if we aren’t careful.

The Premier League announced yesterday, that clubs have agreed not to carry on with the five substitutes rule heading into the new season, reverting things back to the original three during the game and matchday squads back down to eighteen from twenty.

The move, initially brought in to help ease some of the burden on the players because of the fixture congestion brought about to end the season as soon as possible. Although given how next season is looking, I reckon there might be a few teams that will be needing them before too long, but we’ll just have to wait and see about that.

Do you agree with this ruling from the Premier League?

One of the thoughts behind the idea of shifting back to the way things were, as pointed out by Henry Winter at The Times, is that it would benefit the bigger clubs who have more strength in depth and are have more quality at their disposal to bring off the bench compared to the smaller clubs who may have filled their spots with academy players (or other players that wouldn’t have as big an impact on the game).

But as I pointed out, the fixture list next season could potentially get just as bad for some clubs (including us if we decide to go on another cup run), and then that need to utilise the squad, even if they aren’t of the same quality as some of the bigger clubs could become a necessity for us.

What about you? Do you think the Premier League clubs were right to get rid of this rule?
