Sheffield United recovered from their humiliating 4-0 defeat against Scunthorpe United, with victory over recently relegated Portsmouth.

Ched Evans netted the winner in the second half, from a free-kick, but in truth it was a poor game.

Despite Evans netting his second goal of the season, it was Steve Simonsen who took the plaudits, pulling off a string of fine saves to deny Steve Cottrill’s side.

United suffered a blow in the 24th minute when captain Chris Morgan was withdrawn through injury, following his return to the side. Nyron Nosworthy replaced him, to take up his position in central defence.

Even the return of Michael Brown to Bramall Lane couldn’t spark the game into life, with the referee often being the centre of attention. Nugent and Utaka were denied by excellent Simonsen stops before the match winner stepped up.

Ward and subsititute Stephen Quinn contrived a free-kick which resulted in Ched Evans firing through the wall and beating goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown via the post.

Dave Kitson and Nwankwo Kanu piling the pressure onto the Blades backline without managing to create anything of note late in the day.
