The training ground at Shirecliffe has been a big talking point over the last 12 months with United needing to fix some problems at the facilities. On top of this, United have been trying to buy new land in order to build a new training complex.

One huge problem, last season especially, was the training pitch at the top end of the facilities. With the drainage on the pitches being terrible, it ultimately led the pitches to be in poor state during the months of winter.

Following this, many United supporters believed that the terrible state of the training pitch contributed to the huge number of injuries that United suffered in the latter part of the season.

Rhian Brewster, Jayden Bogle, David McGoldrick, Chris Basham, and loanees Ben Davies and Charlie Goode all suffered injuries which led to them missing a large chunk of games.

United don’t want to have a repeat of last seasons injury crisis so they have plans to relay the pitches. Club CEO Stephen Bettis told Yorkshire Live in June that they will be spending £1.8M on the training pitches this summer in order to solve the drainage issues.

Yorkshire Live reporter Nathan Hemmingham today revealed in a tweet that the planned work on the pitches has begun today, and the club hopes that the pitches will be ready a few months into this coming campaign.
