Sheffield United Chief-Executive Trevor Birch says that John Pemberton is not in contention to replace Gary Speed as Blades manager.

The Blades academy director has shown an interest in management, including an interview for the vacancy at Rotherham United following Mark Robins’ departure. However, Birch did comment on Pemberton’ s position at the club describing him as a vital cog in United’s future.

‘John won’t be a contender because he has too important a job to do at the Academy in producing future senior players. In three to five years time I would like seven or eight in the first team.

Pemberton was responsible for bringing in a wealth of talent at Crystal Palace including Victor Moses and Sean Scannell.

‘Whoever comes in as manager will have to work with John because we have to have joined-up thinking with regard to our football strategy.’
